The Tangier day trip with lunch and ferry

Viajes Travelsur's group day crosses from Tarifa on the fast ferry, runs a coach out to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, then walks you through the medina and Kasbah after lunch. Pick it for the track record: with 1,273 reviews it is the most-booked Tangier day trip from Tarifa by a long way, and guests keep naming the same guides.

Tangier Day Trip with Lunch and Ferry

About this experience

Viajes Travelsur runs this group day out of the Estación Marítima in Tarifa. You meet the staff at the information office an hour before the boat, pick up your ferry ticket and go through Spanish exit control. On the fast ferry a Moroccan officer stamps passports on board, so join that queue as soon as you sail. About an hour later you land at Tangier Ville, in the city centre right below the medina, and a coach is waiting.

Here is where the hours go. The listing budgets 105 minutes for the coach tour of Cap Spartel, the headland where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean (you see the lighthouse from outside), and 30 minutes at the Caves of Hercules, about 14 km west of the city. Entry to one cave is included; the second is optional. Then comes an hour of lunch with drinks, two hours of sightseeing with the food market, the synagogue and the Mendoubia gardens, and an hour of free time in the souk. A guided medina walk and the Sultan's Palace are listed as optional extras. Guests report a lot of walking, and a reviewer from the UK said there was no pressure to buy in the shops.

Two caveats. The listing says you head back around 7pm and reach Tarifa around 8pm. That wording dates from when Tangier and Tarifa shared a clock: since Morocco went back to GMT on 20 September 2026, a one-hour crossing that leaves Tangier at 7pm local time lands in Tarifa around 9pm Spanish time. Ask which clock your return is on (our time change post explains the change). And the listing warns that bad weather can move the return to Tanger Med, a different port about 40 km east of the city, which means a coach ride first and a later night. The trip is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Tips before you book

  • Driving to Tarifa? The port car park costs about EUR 18 a day (andalucia.com). Arrive early in summer.
  • Join the passport queue on the ferry the moment it leaves. It is the slowest part of the morning.
  • Ask at the information office which clock the return time is on. Since 20 September Tangier is an hour behind Tarifa.
  • Wear proper shoes. Guests mention a lot of walking, and the medina is all slopes, steps and cobbles.
  • Carry small euro notes or dirhams for the second cave and tips.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you get in Tangier on the Travelsur day trip?

About six hours in Morocco. The listing gives 105 minutes to the coach tour of Cap Spartel, 30 minutes at the caves, an hour of lunch, two hours of guided sightseeing and an hour of free time in the souk.

What time do you get back to Tarifa?

The listing says you return around 7pm and arrive in Tarifa around 8pm. That wording predates Morocco's return to GMT on 20 September 2026; if 7pm means Tangier time, you land in Tarifa nearer 9pm Spanish time. Confirm with the operator, and see our time change post.

Yes. The listing warns that weather can move the return to Tanger Med, a separate port about 40 km east of Tangier, with a coach transfer to get there. The ferry guide explains the two ports.

Do I need a passport for the Tangier day trip?

Bring a passport, or a national ID card if you are an EU citizen. Non-EU travellers should check visa rules themselves; GOV.UK advises that a UK passport should be valid for at least three months after arrival.
