The Tarifa to Tangier ferry

Two companies, about an hour on the water, and a passport queue that starts as soon as you leave the quay. Here is how the crossing works this winter, with the clock change most older guides miss.

The Tarifa to Tangier ferry is the shortest passenger crossing between Europe and Africa that lands you in a city centre. Fast ferries run from Tarifa port to Tangier Ville, the port below the medina, in about an hour. Two lines sail it in 2026, and one familiar name has gone.

We checked the operators, fares and rules against Ferryhopper's route data, DFDS and andalucia.com in November 2026. Fares move with the season, so treat the euro figures as from-prices.

The quick answer

Baleària and AML (Africa Morocco Link) sail Tarifa to Tangier Ville in about an hour, around ten times a day. One-way adult fares start at about €27. Arrive an hour early, bring a passport, and join the queue on board for the Moroccan entry stamp. Since 20 September 2026 Tangier is one hour behind Tarifa, so a 9:00 boat lands at about 9:00 local time.

How do I get a ferry from Tarifa to Tangier?

Book a foot-passenger ticket with Baleària or AML, online or at their desks in the Tarifa maritime station, then sail to Tangier Ville. FRS no longer runs this route.

If you read an older blog, it will tell you to book FRS. Don't. FRS, part of the DFDS group, ran its last Tarifa to Tangier Ville sailing on 4 May 2025, and DFDS now says it no longer operates the route. Baleària started sailing it the following week, with four departures each way at launch and more added that summer.

Today the choice is between two companies, both on fast ferries:

OperatorRouteCrossingGood to know

Ferry tickets are issued in your name, so have your passport ready when you book. On a guided day trip the operator buys them for you: Naturanda, for one, asks for your full name and passport number at booking for that reason.

How long is the ferry ride from Tarifa to Tangier?

About an hour on the water. The fastest listed sailing takes 59 minutes; rough weather can stretch it, and some timetable entries run up to two hours.

The Strait is about 14 km wide at its narrowest, and the fast ferries cover the Tarifa to Tangier run in roughly 60 minutes. Ferryhopper lists crossings from 59 minutes to 2 hours depending on the operator and the date. Count on an hour, plus the wait to get off.

The clock is where people get caught out. Morocco went back to GMT on 20 September 2026, and Spain is on CET until 28 March 2027. Tangier is now one hour behind Tarifa, and two hours behind once Spain moves to summer time. A boat that leaves Tarifa at 9:00 arrives at about 9:00 Tangier time. Coming back, the hour works against you: a 17:00 sailing from Tangier lands at about 19:00 in Tarifa.

Baleària's day trip prints its return times in Moroccan time. Ask whoever sold your ticket which clock theirs is in. The time change post has the full story.

Tangier is on GMT this winter: one hour behind Spain, two from 28 March 2027.

How much does a ferry ticket from Tarifa to Tangier cost?

From about €27 one way for an adult foot passenger in 2026. Most dates on Ferryhopper's calendar sit between about €31 and €50 each way.

The cheapest one-way fare listed for Tarifa to Tangier Ville is about €27, and about €28 the other way. Those are the floor. Pick a busy summer Saturday and you pay more. A business-class seat on Baleària's larger ships starts at about €49.

Two returns at mid-range fares come to roughly €60 to €100 a person before you have eaten anything. That is why a guided day trip looks cheap: the day trip with lunch and ferry is from $100 with the return ferry, a coach, a guide and lunch included. Going alone saves money only if you skip the coach and the lunch. Tangier without a tour runs the numbers.

Driving to Tarifa? The port car park costs about €18 a day (andalucia.com).

How often is the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier?

Around ten departures a day between the two companies, every day of the year. Fewer in winter, more in summer, with the last boat from Tarifa usually around 23:00.

Ferryhopper counts about ten crossings a day; its 2026 route round-up gives a range of roughly 5 to 15 depending on the season. The last sailing from Tarifa usually leaves around 23:00, though that shifts with the day.

For a day trip, the morning matters more than the evening. Group tours tend to use a 9:00 or 11:00 boat: Baleària's own tour offers both. The earlier one is better, because it buys you the medina before the lanes fill up, and the hour gained on the clock gives you a long Moroccan morning.

Winter timetables thin out. Check the evening sailings back before you plan a late dinner in Tangier, and check them again the day before. The 2026-27 ferry post tracks what changes this season.

What is the best ferry from Tarifa to Tangier?

There is little to separate them: both run fast ferries on the same route in about the same time. Pick the sailing time that suits you, then the fare.

We would not pay extra for one company over the other. The differences are small and practical:

  • Baleària has the bigger fleet on the route, a business lounge on the Jaume I and the Avemar Dos, and no weight or size limit on hand luggage. It also sells its own guided day trip, with a 9:00 or 11:00 start.
  • AML allows 30 kg of luggage free, and its departures fill gaps in Baleària's timetable.
  • Both have air-conditioned lounges, a café and a shop on board, and no cabins. You won't need one for an hour.

If you are booking a return on the same day, buy both legs with one company. Tickets are not interchangeable, and a missed boat is easier to sort out at one desk than at two.

How do I get on a ferry from Tarifa to Tangier?

Walk into the maritime station at Tarifa port about an hour before departure, check in at your company's desk, put your bag through the X-ray and show your passport. Baleària closes boarding 25 minutes before the boat leaves.

The Estación Marítima is at the end of the harbour, a short walk from the old town. Tarifa's bus station is about 1.2 km away on Calle Batalla del Salado (andalucia.com), so allow 15 minutes on foot or take a taxi with luggage.

  1. Arrive early. An hour is enough for foot passengers. Day-trip groups meet inside the station: Travelsur at the information office, Baleària in front of its ticket office.
  2. Check in at the operator's desk with your booking and passport. You get a boarding card.
  3. Security and Spanish exit control. Bags go through an X-ray, and Spanish police check your passport.
  4. Board on foot up the ramp. Sit anywhere in the lounge.
  5. Get up again as soon as the ferry leaves. The Moroccan passport queue forms on board.

Morocco is outside the EU and Schengen. Baleària accepts a national ID card only from EU citizens; everyone else needs a passport. The UK government says your passport should be valid for at least three months after you arrive, and many nationalities, including UK, EU and US citizens, can stay up to 90 days without a visa.

Where do you get your passport stamped going to Tangier?

On the ferry. A Moroccan immigration officer travels on board, and passengers queue to have passports checked and stamped and to hand in an arrival card. There is only a quick check at the foot of the ramp in Tangier.

This is the part nobody explains until you are standing in it. Somewhere on the ferry, usually near the front of the lounge, a Moroccan officer sits at a desk with a stamp. Everyone going to Tangier has to pass that desk before the boat docks (andalucia.com). If you sit down with a coffee first, you spend the last half of the crossing in a long line.

  • Fill in the arrival card if you are given one. Pens run short, so bring your own.
  • Check the stamp before you walk away. The UK government warns that a missing entry stamp has caused problems for people leaving Morocco.
  • In Tangier, bags go through an X-ray again, and an officer glances at the stamp on the way out of the terminal.

Coming back, Moroccan exit control happens in Tangier port before you board, and Spanish control in Tarifa when you land.

Let someone else hold the tickets: return ferry, guide and lunch on the most booked trip.

Tangier Ville or Tanger Med, and what happens when the wind blows?

Tarifa ferries use Tangier Ville, in the city centre. Tanger Med is a different port about 40 km east. When the levante blows hard, sailings can be cancelled or moved there.

Tangier Ville sits at the foot of the medina, by the city beach. You walk out of the terminal and the old town rises in front of you. Tanger Med is a huge container and car-ferry port about 40 km along the coast, used by the Algeciras boats. Don't book a ferry to Tanger Med thinking it is the same place.

The Strait is one of the windiest stretches of water in Europe, and a strong easterly levante stops the fast ferries now and then. When that happens the operators rebook or refund you. The Travelsur listing warns that weather can move a day trip's return to Tanger Med, which means a long coach ride before the boat. If your flight home leaves Spain the next morning, keep a spare day. The ferry post covers winter weather.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a Tarifa to Tangier ferry ticket at the port?

Yes. Baleària and AML both sell at their desks in the Tarifa maritime station. Buying online a day or two ahead is safer in July and August, when morning boats fill up.

Do I need a return ticket to enter Morocco?

The UK government's entry advice does not list a return ticket as a requirement for a tourist stay, but you will want one anyway for a day trip. Buy both legs with the same company.

Can I use euros on the ferry and in Tangier?

On the ferry, yes. In Tangier, euros are often accepted for small purchases, and the local currency is the Moroccan dirham. Carry some small euro coins for toilets and tips.

Is the Tarifa to Tangier ferry rough?

Usually not for long: the crossing is an hour. On a windy day the Strait gets choppy, and people prone to seasickness sit low and in the middle of the boat.
