Tarifa in one day

Most people see Tarifa as the place the Tangier boat leaves from. Give it a day of its own: a caliph's castle, the tip of Europe, a Roman town on a white beach, and dolphins in the Strait.

Tarifa is small. The walled old town takes twenty minutes to cross, the castle sits on the harbour, and the long beaches start at the edge of town. What makes it different is the wind, which blows hard enough on many days to make this one of the great kitesurfing spots in Europe.

Opening times and prices below come from Andalucía's tourism board and andalucia.com, checked in November 2026.

The quick answer

In one day: the castle of Guzmán el Bueno (Wednesday to Sunday, €4), the guided noon visit to Isla de las Palomas and the southernmost point of continental Europe, lunch in the old town, then a two-hour whale and dolphin trip or the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia, and sunset on Los Lances beach. Tarifa has no train station: take the train to Algeciras and a 30-minute bus.

Is Tarifa worth seeing?

Yes, for a day or more. It is a pretty walled town on the Strait with a castle, two seas, long beaches and Morocco on the horizon.

Tarifa is worth more than the queue for the ferry. The old town is a tangle of white lanes inside medieval walls, entered through the Puerta de Jerez. It has good tapas bars, a relaxed surf-town crowd and very little of the high-rise building of the Costa del Sol.

The catch is the wind. On a strong levante day, the beaches are sandblasted and the lanes are the place to be. On a calm day, it is one of the best beach towns in Spain. If you are here for the Tangier ferry, give Tarifa the day before or the day after.

What is Tarifa famous for?

Being the southernmost point of continental Europe, the wind and kitesurfing, the castle of Guzmán el Bueno, whale watching, and the closest view of Africa from Spain.

  • The tip of Europe. Punta de Tarifa, on the far side of Isla de las Palomas, is the southernmost point of mainland Spain and continental Europe.
  • Wind. The levante from the east and the poniente from the west funnel through the Strait. Kitesurfers come from all over Europe for them, to Los Lances and Valdevaqueros beaches.
  • The castle and the story of Guzmán el Bueno, who held it in the 1290s and refused to surrender it when the besiegers threatened his son's life.
  • Whales and dolphins in the Strait, a two-hour boat trip from the harbour.
  • Africa. The Strait is about 14 km wide at its narrowest; on a clear day the Rif mountains look close enough to touch.

The castle of Guzmán el Bueno and Isla de las Palomas

The castle opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00, for €4. The island can only be visited on a guided tour at 12:00, for €4, booked in advance.

The castle was built in 960 on the orders of Abd al-Rahman III, the caliph of Córdoba. Castile took Tarifa in 1292, and Alonso Pérez de Guzmán held the castle against a siege soon after. The besiegers had his son, and threatened to kill him if Guzmán did not surrender. He refused, and the nickname el Bueno stuck. Climb the walls for the view over the harbour to Morocco.

Andalucía's tourism board lists it as open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00, last entry 45 minutes before closing, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Adults pay €4, ages 12 to 18 €2.50, under-12s free. Only cards are accepted.

Isla de las Palomas is joined to the town by a causeway you can walk freely. The island itself, a military zone until the late 1990s, is guided only (andalucia.com): daily at 12:00, weather permitting, 75 minutes, up to 30 people, with the lighthouse and the walk towards Punta de Tarifa. Adults €4, under-12s free. Reserve by phone or email and pay at the Tarifa tourist office at least an hour before.

Is Baelo Claudia worth the trip from Tarifa?

Yes, if you like ruins on a beach. A Roman town with a forum, temples, theatre and fish-salting factory sits right on Bolonia beach, about 20 km west by road. It is free for EU citizens.

Baelo Claudia grew rich on the trade with North Africa and on garum, the fish sauce Romans loved. The remains include a temple, the forum, a basilica, baths, an aqueduct, a restored theatre and the salting tanks, with a visitor centre and a marble statue of the Doryphorus. Behind it, Bolonia beach runs white and wide, with a large dune at its western end.

It is closed on Mondays. From mid-September to March it opens Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 to 18:00 and Sunday 9:00 to 15:00. EU citizens enter free with ID; everyone else pays €1.50. A car or a taxi is the easy way there.

Can you go whale watching in Tarifa?

Yes. Boats leave Tarifa harbour for two-hour trips from about March to October. Dolphins and pilot whales are seen most often; orcas are likeliest from mid-July to mid-September.

The Strait holds resident common, striped and bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales. Sperm and fin whales pass through, and orcas follow the tuna in high summer: andalucia.com gives mid-July to mid-September as the best time to see them. Trips run roughly from February or March to October or November, weather permitting, and last about two hours.

Don't do it on the same day as Tangier. The ferries and a whale boat in one day is a lot of time at sea, and the timings rarely fit. The afternoon before, or the morning after, works well.

Can you get to Tarifa by train?

No. Tarifa has no railway station. Take the train to Algeciras, about 25 km away, then a bus of around 30 minutes.

The nearest station is Algeciras, on the line from Madrid and Granada via Ronda (itimaker). From Algeciras, local buses M-150 and M-160 run about hourly between roughly 6:00 and 23:00, and Comes runs about six buses a day (andalucia.com). Tarifa's bus station is about 1.2 km from the port.

From Málaga, there is no train at all to this corner. Avanza and Comes run a couple of direct buses a day, and the drive takes about two hours. Seville and Cádiz also have buses to Tarifa.

The port is the end of the line: no trains, but boats to Africa.

What is the best day trip to take in Málaga?

Granada's Alhambra or Ronda for Spain; Tangier if you want Morocco. From Málaga, Tangier makes a long day: two hours to Tarifa each way before the ferry.

The classic day trips from Málaga are the Alhambra in Granada (book tickets weeks ahead), Ronda and its gorge, the Caminito del Rey walkway, Nerja and Frigiliana, and Gibraltar. Each is under two hours away by road.

Tangier is a different kind of day: another continent, another language, a ferry. It is also the longest. A private trip such as APARTRIP's tour picks you up on the Costa del Sol and runs 10 to 12 hours; Trip and Transfer also starts from Málaga. Our advice: if Tangier is the goal, sleep in Tarifa the night before. You get the 9:00 boat without a 6:00 alarm, and a day in Tarifa thrown in.

From the Costa del Sol: a private guide and driver, ferry, food and pickup in one booking.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you need in Tarifa?

One full day covers the castle, the island, the old town and the beach. Add a second for Baelo Claudia, a whale trip or a lesson in kitesurfing.

Can you see Africa from Tarifa?

Yes, on a clear day the Moroccan coast and the Rif mountains are plain to see. The Strait is about 14 km wide at its narrowest.

Is Tarifa windy all year?

Wind is common in every season, and strong levante days come in runs. Some days are calm. If the wind is up, the old town lanes and the castle are the sheltered places to be.

Can you do Tarifa and Tangier in one day?

Only by giving Tarifa the evening. A day trip to Tangier fills about nine hours, port to port. A day each is much better.
