Tangier without a tour

The port sits under the medina, so you can step off the ferry and start walking. Here is a route for one day, what the museums cost, how the taxis work, and how to say no to the men at the port gate.

You don't need a tour to see Tangier. Tangier Ville port is in the city centre, the medina climbs the hill right behind it, and everything in the old town is walkable. What a tour gives you is the coach to Cap Spartel, a guide, lunch sorted and someone to handle the touts. Without one, you trade that for time.

Museum hours and prices below come from the American Legation and Le360's 2026 museum guide. Moroccan opening hours shift, so check on the day.

The quick answer

Buy a return ferry with Baleària or AML (from about €27 each way), walk out of Tangier Ville port and up into the medina. Six hours covers the Petit Socco, the Kasbah and its museum, Café Hafa, the Grand Socco and the American Legation. Add a taxi for Cap Spartel. Politely ignore anyone offering to guide you at the port.

Can you do a Tangier day trip from Tarifa without a tour?

Yes. Book a return ferry, bring your passport, and walk. The port is a short walk below the medina, and nothing in the old town needs a car.

Going alone is the better day if you want to set your own pace, skip the coach and the shop stops, and spend your hours in the old town. It is the worse one if you want Cap Spartel without haggling with a taxi, or you dislike being approached in the street.

On cost it is close. Two ferry legs come to about €55 to €100, lunch in the medina is cheap, and a taxi out to the cape adds a little. The group day trip is from $100 with all of that included. Going alone saves money on quiet dates with cheap fares, and costs more in August.

How do you get from the ferry into the medina?

On foot. Leave the terminal after the bag X-ray, walk towards the old walls and climb. The medina starts at the edge of the port.

Port formalities in Tangier take a few minutes: your stamp was done on board, so it is the X-ray and a glance at your passport. Then you are out. The white medina rises straight ahead, and the lanes lead up to the Petit Socco.

The port gate is where unofficial guides wait. They are friendly and persistent, they will tell you a street is closed or the museum is shut today, and they expect money at the end. A firm la, shukran (no, thank you) and walking on works. The UK government's advice notes that people posing as official guides often approach tourists, and that a real guide carries an official badge. Want a guide? Book one in advance, or take a private tour that meets you at the port.

Download an offline map before you sail. Medina lanes confuse phone GPS, and an offline map stops you needing to ask.

What to do in Tangier in 1 day?

Walk the medina from the Petit Socco up to the Kasbah, have tea at Café Hafa, come down to the Grand Socco and finish at the American Legation. Add Cap Spartel by taxi if you have time.

This loop works with a 9:00 boat from Tarifa, which lands at about 9:00 Tangier time, and an evening boat back. Times are what we would allow, walking slowly, not a schedule.

That is too much for one day with the cape included. Drop either the cape or the Legation. We would drop the cape: the medina is why you crossed.

Prefer a guide and car but your own pace? About six hours in Tangier, privately.

Kasbah Museum and American Legation: hours and prices

The American Legation charges 20 dirhams and opens Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 17:00. The Kasbah Museum is closed on Tuesdays; 2026 reports put its ticket at 30 to 60 dirhams.

The American Legation was given to the United States by Sultan Moulay Suliman in 1821 and is often called the first American public property abroad. It is now a museum and a cultural institute, with a Paul Bowles wing, old maps, paintings of Tangier and a quiet Moorish courtyard. It is in the lower medina at 8 rue d'Amérique, near the American Steps. The Legation's own site lists 20 dirhams entry and 50 dirhams with a guide, weekdays only; groups can visit at weekends by appointment.

The Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures fills the old Dar el Makhzen palace at the top of the medina. Le360 gives a 30-dirham combined ticket with the Kasbah contemporary art space and says both close on Tuesdays; another 2025 guide lists 60 dirhams. Bring cash.

Grand Socco, Petit Socco and Café Hafa: what's the difference?

The Grand Socco is the big square where the new town meets the medina. The Petit Socco is the small square inside the medina. Café Hafa is a cliff café west of the Kasbah.

The Grand Socco, officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, is a busy roundabout of a square with a fountain, palms, the Mendoubia gardens on one side and the old Cinéma Rif, now the city's cinematheque. Bab Fahs, the gate into the medina, opens off it.

The Petit Socco is a few minutes downhill inside the medina: a small square of tables and old cafés, where you sit, order a mint tea and watch the city walk past. It is the best seat in town.

Café Hafa has been open since 1921. Its terraces step down a cliff in the Marshan district, looking across the Strait to Spain. Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones all drank tea here. The tea is cheap, the service unhurried, and the view is the point. It is about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the Kasbah.

How do you get to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules without a tour?

By taxi, about 14 km west of the city. Agree the price for the round trip, including waiting time, before you get in.

Tangier has two kinds of taxi. Petit taxis are small, metered city cabs; the flag fare went up from 5 to 7 dirhams in July 2025 (Hespress). Grand taxis are larger cars that run longer trips and shared routes. For Cap Spartel and the caves, you want one driver to take you out, wait, and bring you back.

  • Ask at your café or a hotel reception for a driver. They know the going rate.
  • Agree the full price, the number of stops and the waiting time before setting off. Write it down.
  • Allow two hours or more for the round trip with the lighthouse and the caves.
  • Pay at the end, in dirhams if you have them.

If that sounds like a hassle, it is the honest case for a tour. The group trips include the cape and the caves by coach; a private day gives you a car and a guide for both.

How much time do I need in Tangier?

Six hours covers the medina, the Kasbah, a café and lunch on foot. Add two hours for Cap Spartel and the caves. One night lets you see Tangier after the day-trippers leave.

On a day trip, the boats set the clock. With the 9:00 departure from Tarifa landing about 9:00 Tangier time and a boat back in the early evening, you get seven or eight hours in the city. That is a full, unhurried day in the old town. It is not enough for the old town and the cape together without rushing one of them.

Remember the hour: Tangier is behind Spain this winter. A 19:00 sailing from Tangier gets to Tarifa at about 21:00 Spanish time. Check whether your ferry ticket shows Spanish or Moroccan time, and set an alarm for the walk back down to the port.

How cheap is Tangier?

Cheap by Spanish standards. Museum tickets are 20 to 60 dirhams, a city taxi starts at 7 dirhams, and a medina lunch costs a fraction of one in Tarifa.

The ferry is the big cost of the day. Once you are in Tangier, the money goes slowly: mint tea, a tagine, a museum or two, a taxi. Prices in the tourist restaurants around the Petit Socco and the Kasbah are higher than in the new town, and still low.

  • Currency: the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Euros are often accepted in shops and cafés that see visitors, at a rate that favours the seller.
  • Cash: bring small notes. Many cafés and stalls are cash only. ATMs are easy to find in the new town.
  • Haggling: expected in the souk, not in cafés or restaurants with printed menus.
  • Tips: round up in cafés; a few dirhams for anyone who helps you.

Frequently asked questions

Is it easy to do Tangier on your own?

Yes, for anyone who has travelled in a busy city before. The medina is compact and the port is in the centre. The hardest part is saying no to unofficial guides at the port gate.

How do I avoid unofficial guides in Tangier?

Walk with purpose, say a polite no, and keep moving. Don't follow anyone who says a street or museum is closed. If you want a guide, book one beforehand.

Is the American Legation open at weekends?

Not for individual visitors. The Legation's own site gives Monday to Friday hours, with weekend visits for groups by appointment. Plan it for a weekday.

Can I walk from Tangier port to Café Hafa?

Yes, through the medina and the Kasbah and out into the Marshan. It is uphill most of the way. Allow 40 minutes or more with stops, or take a petit taxi.
