Tangier day trips compared

Six day trips run from Tarifa to Tangier, from $100 to $267. They share a ferry and a nine-hour shape. What differs is how much of the day you spend walking the medina and how much sitting on a coach.

The medina is what most people cross for. The tours give it between 90 minutes and a few hours.

Every group trip here leaves Tarifa in the morning, crosses on a fast ferry, drives out to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, stops for lunch, walks the medina and catches an evening boat back. On paper they look the same. Lay the itineraries side by side and they are not.

We compared the six GetYourGuide listings from the itinerary each one publishes, checked in November 2026. Times below are that listing's own figures, not a promise for every departure.

The quick answer

For most people, the day trip with lunch and ferry at $100 is the one to book: it gives the medina about two guided hours plus an hour of free time. Baleària's trip suits a later 11:00 start or a German or French guide. For a private day at your own pace, Trip and Transfer is the cheapest at $171. Expect a shop stop on every group trip.

What are some good day trips from Tarifa to Tangier?

Three group trips (Travelsur $100, Baleària $104, Naturanda $129) and three private ones (Trip and Transfer $171, APARTRIP $262, Tangier advantours $267). All include the return ferry and lunch.

Here they are, cheapest first. Prices are GetYourGuide from-prices per person in USD, November 2026.

How much of a 9-hour day trip is actually spent in Tangier?

About six hours. Two of the nine go on the ferries, and the coach out to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules takes a good part of what remains.

The maths is simple. Nine hours port to port, minus an hour on each ferry, minus the queues to get on and off, leaves roughly six hours on Moroccan soil. The time difference helps on the way out: a 9:00 boat from Tarifa lands at about 9:00 Tangier time, because Morocco has been on GMT since 20 September 2026. It costs you the hour back on the way home.

Of those six hours, the cape and the caves eat about two. Cap Spartel is about 14 km west of the city, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and the caves are just south of it. Both are pretty. Neither is Tangier. Lunch takes another hour. What is left is the medina.

The Caves of Hercules: the famous "map of Africa" opening. Half an hour here is plenty.

How much time do you get in the medina on each tour?

Between about 90 minutes and three hours on the group trips, going by the itineraries. Travelsur gives it the most; Baleària and Naturanda give it about half that.

This is the honest variable, so we added up each listing's own figures:

TripCoach, cape and cavesLunchMedina and market
TravelsurCap Spartel tour 105 min + caves 30 min1 hourAbout 2 h sightseeing + 1 h free
BaleàriaCoach 35 min, caves 20, cape 20, viewpoints; camel ride 30 min optional1 hour30 min guided + 1 h free in the market

APARTRIPCaves (entry included), cape, optional camelIncludedSouk, medina and Kasbah at your pace

Naturanda's listing also allows 75 minutes for each ferry crossing, more than the others, which squeezes the day further. On the private trips you decide: skip the caves and the whole six hours can go on the old town.

Do Tangier day trips stop at shops?

Expect at least one. Group trips commonly stop at a carpet, spice, herbal or leather shop. You can look, drink the tea and leave without buying.

No listing here spells out a shop stop, but the itineraries leave room for one inside the guided medina time, and it is a long tradition on Tangier tours. The usual suspects are a carpet house with a rooftop, a herbalist with argan oil and spice mixes, and leather in the souk. Baleària's listing names shopping for leather goods in the souq as a highlight.

The pitch can be long and the tea is free. Nobody can make you buy. If you do want a carpet, decide your price before you go upstairs and be ready to walk away from it. On the Travelsur trip, guests report a light touch: one, writing in September 2026, said there was no pressure to buy.

Want to skip shops entirely? Book private and say so, or go without a tour.

Group or private: which Tangier day trip is worth it?

Group if you want the cheapest well-run day and don't mind a coach. Private if you walk slowly, travel with children, want no shops, or start from Málaga.

The jump from $100 to $171 buys a lot. On the Trip and Transfer private day you get your own guide and car in Tangier, about six hours there, lunch and monument entry, and a look around Tarifa before the boat. Fewer people, no waiting for the slowest in a group of forty, and you pick the stops.

APARTRIP's private tour at $262 adds pickup on the Costa del Sol and a 10 to 12-hour day, with food, drinks and the cave entry included. It is the only one here that says it is wheelchair accessible. The listing also says it may cancel or reschedule in poor weather.

Tangier advantours works differently: you buy the trip, and a private guide meets you off the ferry in Tangier holding an Omar tour sign. Its listing description is mostly about Casablanca, not Tangier, so confirm the day's plan with the operator before you go.

What is the best day trip from Tarifa to Tangier?

Our picks, by the kind of day you want:

  • First visit, best value: Travelsur, $100. Lunch with drinks and the synagogue entry included. The listing says the return arrives in Tarifa around 8pm.

  • Everything in one price: Naturanda, $129, with lunch, drinks and entrance fees included. It needs four people to run.
  • Your own pace: Trip and Transfer, $171.
  • From the Costa del Sol, or with a wheelchair: APARTRIP, $262.

Is Tangier worth a day trip?

Yes, as a first taste of Morocco an hour from Spain. It is a sample, not a visit: six hours, a slice of which goes to the coach.

You get the Kasbah, a guided walk through lanes that have barely changed in a century, a Moroccan lunch, mint tea and the odd feeling of looking back at Spain from Africa. For a day out from a beach holiday, that is a lot.

What you don't get is Tangier after the day-trippers leave, the cafés of the Marshan at sunset, or time to get lost. If those sound like the point, stay a night. And if you are weighing Tangier against a longer Morocco trip, read Tangier or Marrakech.

What do the day trips leave out?

Drinks, tips and the camel ride on most; museum entry on Baleària's. Check what your listing says before you go, and carry small euros.

  • Drinks at lunch: included on Travelsur and Naturanda, extra on Baleària.
  • Camel ride: a small extra fee on the group trips, paid on the spot.
  • Museum entry: not included on Baleària. Travelsur includes the synagogue and one cave; the second cave is optional.
  • Tips: not included anywhere. Guides and drivers on group trips usually hope for one.
  • Travel insurance: included on Baleària's trip only.

Bring your passport, shoes with grip and a layer for the ferry deck. The walking is real: steps, slopes and cobbles.
