Tarifa to Tangier ferry, winter 2026-27

Two companies sail Tarifa to Tangier Ville this winter, and the wind decides more often than the timetable. Here is who runs the boats, how often, and what happens to your day when the port closes.

If you last read about this crossing a couple of years ago, the names have changed. FRS, the company most older guides mention, no longer sails it. Baleària and AML (Africa Morocco Link) share the route now, with fast boats doing the trip in about an hour.

Winter is the quiet season, with fewer departures and more weather. This post sets out what to expect from November 2026 to March 2027.

The quick answer

Baleària and AML sail Tarifa to Tangier Ville this winter, about an hour each way, with around ten departures a day between them. Strong levante (east) and poniente (west) winds close the port of Tarifa several times a winter, sometimes for a whole day. Keep a spare day, and know whether your tour returns you via Tanger Med and Algeciras when Tarifa shuts.

Who sails the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier this winter?

Two companies: Baleària and AML (Africa Morocco Link). Both run fast passenger ferries from Tarifa to Tangier Ville, the port in the city centre.

Ferryhopper's 2026 overview names Baleària and Africa Morocco Link as the two operators. AML opened its Tangier Ville to Tarifa service on 4 June 2024 with the Morocco Express 1, according to its Wikipedia entry. The company belongs to the Moroccan group CTM (51%) and Stena Line (49%).

Both land at Tangier Ville, below the medina. That matters: Tanger Med is a different port about 40 km east, served from Algeciras, and you do not want to end up there by mistake. One-way adult fares from Tarifa start at about €27 on Ferryhopper's timetable, and most day trips include the return crossing in the price.

What happened to FRS on the Tarifa to Tangier route?

FRS, part of DFDS, ran its last Tarifa to Tangier Ville sailing on Sunday 4 May 2025. Baleària started the following week.

DFDS says plainly that from 5 May it no longer operates the route, and points passengers to Algeciras for Tanger Med and Ceuta. Old FRS web addresses now redirect there. If a blog or a printed guidebook tells you to buy an FRS ticket in Tarifa, it predates the change.

Baleària announced its first Tarifa to Tangier Ville sailing for 8 May 2025. Yabiladi reported four daily departures from each port at the start, with more planned for the summer.

Baleària also sells a full-day trip to Tangier on GetYourGuide, with the ferry, a guide and lunch included. It is the only day trip here sold by the company that sails the boat.

How often is the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier in winter?

Around ten departures a day across both companies, fewer than in summer. The first boat leaves Tarifa around 9:00.

Ferryhopper puts it at "around 5-15 daily departures in 2026", which is honest about how much the number moves with the season. A winter snapshot helps: on 21 January 2026, Hespress reported that nine Baleària and AML sailings between 10:00 and 21:00 were cancelled, after the 9:00 boat had left. That is roughly the shape of a winter day: a 9:00 departure, then a boat every hour or two into the evening.

For a day trip, the timetable matters less than you think. The tour books your seats on fixed sailings, usually the 9:00 or 11:00 out. If you go on your own, check the return times the day before. Remember the clock: since September 2026 Tangier is an hour behind Tarifa, so read our post on the time change before you plan a tight evening.

Why do levante and poniente winds cancel the Tarifa ferry?

Tarifa sits at the narrowest, windiest point of the Strait. Strong easterly levante or westerly poniente winds raise seas the fast ferries cannot sail in, and the port authority closes Tarifa.

The Strait works like a funnel between two seas. The levante blows from the east, the poniente from the west, and Tarifa's kite beaches exist because of both. Fast ferries are light and quick. That makes them sensitive to big waves in a way the larger ships out of Algeciras are not.

Last winter gives a fair picture. In January 2026 the route closed from 10:00 after the first boat left. On 12 February, Morocco World News reported Storm Nils stopping Tarifa sailings after the 9:00 departure, with westerly winds and the closure expected to run into the next day. On 20 March a strong levante of 50 to 61 km/h kept the port shut all day, and Baleària cancelled the next morning's 9:00 as well, according to the same paper.

Notice the pattern in all three: Algeciras to Tanger Med kept running. The closure was Tarifa's, not the Strait's. Spain's weather agency AEMET publishes coastal marine forecasts; a yellow warning for the Cadiz coast is a good reason to ask your operator the evening before.

The same wind that fills the kites on Tarifa beach can close the port.

What happens to a day trip when the ferry is cancelled?

If the morning boat does not sail, the trip does not run and you are offered another date or your money back. If the wind rises while you are in Tangier, you may come home via Tanger Med and Algeciras.

The listings say this in their own words. The day trip with lunch and ferry states that weather can move the return to Tanger Med. The private day tour from Tarifa or Málaga says it may be cancelled or rescheduled for poor weather. Baleària's trip notes that the operator is not responsible for weather or maritime delays. None of them can sail when the port is closed.

The awkward case is the afternoon closure. Tanger Med is about 40 km east of Tangier, and Algeciras is about 25 km from Tarifa, so a diverted return can add a couple of hours and a coach ride on each side. If your car is parked at Tarifa port, ask the operator before you go how they bring diverted guests back to it.

Our advice is boring and it works. Do not put the Tangier trip on your last day in Spain, and never the day before a flight. Book with free cancellation (every tour on this site has it up to 24 hours before), check the forecast the evening before, and keep a spare day. On a stormy day in Tarifa, our one day in Tarifa guide has plenty to fill it.

When will Baleària's electric ferries start sailing to Tangier?

Not this winter. Baleària floated the first of two all-electric fast ferries in October 2026 and plans to put it on Tarifa to Tangier from summer 2027.

The two catamarans are being built at the Armon yard in Gijón. Energías Renovables reported on 27 October 2026 that the first one is afloat: 87 metres long, with a 14 MWh battery, due on the route from summer 2027, with the second boat to follow after that summer.

In June 2026 The Objective gave the names as España 2030 and Maroc 2030, a capacity of 804 passengers each, and an investment of more than €150 million including charging equipment in both ports. Service depends on the ports being ready too.

For a winter 2026-27 day trip, nothing changes: you cross on the current fast ferries. Expect a quieter, cleaner boat if you come back in the second half of 2027.
